Scrolling on Instagram one day, I came upon the work of Steven Higginson (stevenhigginsonart on Instagram) and felt very inspired. He made a portrait of a little girl sitting at the table next to a recently finished drawing and some crayons. (you should check it out). What caught my eye about this portrait of Steven's is that it told a story. It made me reflect on my own life and things that have happened to me. His painting made me remember the this scene from our table. When the idea struck to make this, it felt like I could be telling the other side of the story based.
As it turned out, by the time the idea struck, the drawing had been marinating in the trash. I had to dig it out and request my sons help in recreating the scene. He was more than willing to recreate his initial disappointment.
Making this portrait really transformed my work. I went from making things for fun, to making things with a purpose. I found my purpose in trying to tell stories.
