This portrait has had many background colors. It originally had the vibrant green background seen in the time-lapse video seen below, but I felt that color made her skin look really sickly. Somewhere along the way I decided to change the background color to bring out more of the red tones in her skin. She looks much healthier now. It's interesting to see how the background color really does impact the rest of the coloring in a painting.
